The Back Bay Hotel
350 Stuart Street
617 266 7200

The beautiful Back Bay Hotel is most well known for having been the former Boston police headquarters from 1926 till the '90s, and in fact, on the Berkeley Street side, the sign can still be seen, carved into the granite. The other winning aspect of this hotel is location, location, location as it's super close to Newbury Street, the shops at the Prudential Center and Boston Common. The beautiful warm- beige themed 225 rooms and three suites have held up remarkably well since the opening in '04, looking still new and well- cared for, and offer visitors down pillows and comforters, heated towel racks, multi- head showers, CD players, and Korres bathroom amenities. While rates start at $335, a rotation of friendly promos (at the time of our writing this included 'stay for 3, pay for 2' and 'kids stay free') and including simple perks such as free internet, both wired and wireless, make for winning deals. The only two drawbacks to the Back Bay are complicated parking (the hotel has a valet partnership for $39 a night or its street parking - do-able if you're lucky - we were) and the ever- present Boston street noise. Not unmanageable but definitely noticeable. p.s. the made to order waffles at breakfast are a must- have.
