There's nothing terribly American about this bar, except perhaps it goes back to a time when this kind of cocktailing wasn't very English. The spot that persists for dates, pre- theatre and after- work drinks, with its low and formal two- tops remains popular for those who don't want rowdiness with their drinks. An air of formality (not stuffiness) pervades the space, with tone set by the hostess. Piano music and extremely artful cocktails (they make their own Bloody Mary mix from scratch; formula a secret) elevate the whole experience. For a bit of bar entertainment, sit at the small curved bar in the back and let them make you special concoctions. Oh, dress up, or you'll feel awkward as even the staff do.
