Purl 50-54 Blandford Street W1U 7HX +44 207 935 0835 This spot wouldn't be out of a place in a Sherlock Holmes re-make or an episode of Ripper Street. Though Purl markets itself as a "speakeasy" (you have to book and sit where they tell you), it really is more of a multi-room lounge bar with nice cocktails and mismatched armchairs, than anything that harks back to those questionable illegal drinking establishments of yore. Look for the man sitting on a stool, playing with his phone, holding a clipboard and you've found this basement bar. The requisite two tiny finger sandwiches come with your drinks and this spot actually does serve a small menu of food (well, last time we checked). If you're a fan of gin, whiskey, bourbon, or any of the classic liquors, you will love the creations here. Alternately there is a very small selection of wines which qualify as drinkable. Many hidden corners means lots of couples on dates, awkward old friends trying to end up on a date, and yes the occasional assignation of work colleagues from nearby Bond or Charlotte Street offices. |
