The front of this Smithfield pub is deceptively, well pub-like, but
though it's popular with City types (it's just at Barbican tube so
massive banking crowd Thursday and Friday evenings), hidden behind a
side door are 6 spectacular rooms accompanied with personalised, warm
service perfect for travellers. Choose the Market suite, which makes
superb use of space, opening onto a copper tub (nice touch, the
shaving mirror), double copper sinks, rainfall shower with Miller
Harris toiletries, followed by a small lounge and sleek bedroom
complete with photoprinted headboard of the neighbourhood. Both rooms
manage to have their own corners with separate TVs and one of the most
comfortable beds we've ever slept in. The lounge even opens onto that
city hotel rarity, a small outdoor patio. Breakfast isn't complicated.
Over the day's newspapers, from 7 am, they have grilled kippers, eggs
on toast, or the traditional full English breakfast. (Monday to Friday
Smithfield butchers, you can even get a full English fry up with a
pint for £7.95)
