Gone are the days of bad hotels by the airport. This spectacular Waldorf=Astoria Hotel, located on the grounds of the Duke of Northumberland's estate near Heathrow, comes complete with its own live butterfly collection, zoo, astonishing chef and breath-taking grounds. You won't want to leave the rooms what with the nouveau classic decor of high plush beds, sculptural chandeliers, state-of-the-art Samsung widescreen DVR TVs, rainfall shower bathrooms with heated floors but when you do, your first stop should be in chef Lee Streeton's restaurant The Capability. Here he has redefined sustaining the British basics. You'll be able to catch fish on the grounds and have them cooked. And growing his own herbs and veg on the grounds is just a start to his sustainable efforts. (Don't miss the breakfast crepes, the pork in Somerset cider with surf clams, or Dorset snails with black pudding.) You could spend days here since it's adjacent to Kew, but purchase a Zone 1-4 tube day card (less than cost of 2 rides) and this will cover your rail transit into London, just 40 minutes away.
