Canteen 2 Crispin Place, Spitalfields 011 44 845 686 1122 To us, this is 'the' place to go to if you're either working near the Liverpool tube or just find yourself hanging out in Shoreditch in general. (After all, how many meals will you really be able to have at Shoreditch House?) You'll need to overlook Canteen's inflexibility about seating and put up with the lack of privacy or personal space a la Wagamama but the menu is really great. They do British cooking proud in a way that has changed English pride about their own food and foreigners opinions. With breakfast all day offering Arbroath Smokie anytime, lunch has devilled kidneys on toast and smoke mackerel potato salad as tasty starters. But the best dishes are the Glamorgan vegetarian sausages with beetroot relish and the daily pies and roasts, which when it's the traditional Sunday supper of roast beef with Yorkshire pudding that comes with potatoes and veggies all in one plate, is truly at its best. For those in a rush, there's a quick menu that's substantial, including all of the above mains and also braised lamb with, what else, peas and mint, and of course fish and chips with tartare sauce. To finish off, there's about seven desserts including treacle tart with Jersey cream and Eton mess. So, they have a lot of attitude (in fact, they tip themselves.) But if you can tolerate the smugness, one of the best meals in town. |
