Chinese Cricket Club 19 New Bridge Street 011 44 207 438 8051 City workers just got lucky. An unexpected deliciousness, this spot is quite possibly the best Chinese restaurant in all of the U.K. Don't let the location (inside the super businessy Crowne Plaza) fool you; the food is amazing. Exquisite Cantonese dim sum mixed in with Sichuan specialties, the most winning items are the chilled drunken chicken in Shao Hsing wine, the delightful chili squid with Sichuan pepper, an unbelievable ma po tofu (quite spicy) and the dry sauteed green beans (which may not have a fancy name but are a can't- miss.) We ate our way through the menu, with only the scallops disappointing us, and wished we could promptly make room for another meal with them. There's a dim sum set menu, a chef's tasting menu, a Chong Quing menu, a WuHan vegetarian menu, a ChengDu menu, the dishes on which will make any homesick Chinese person feel right at home. Manager Tony Chan runs a tight yet amiable ship and you would be in good hands for business dinners, holiday parties, or hosting your out of town parents. He's managed to deliver the kind of Chinese elegance only found deep in the heart of China and which, in all our years, eating our way through even the best Western Chinese restaurants, we never really found till now. You can even book yourself into one of exec chef de cuisine Brendan Speed's master classes. Oh, did we mention that it's affordable? Wow. |
