The opulent Casa del Mar is a hideaway tucked down a little street which offers guests luxe, from the plush beds, to the throws, to the ipod speakers. True to what one would picture when one pictures vintage Cali style, this hotel, which was the crown jewel of the neighbourhood in the 20s, still coddles guests with ocean views and sumptuous service. It's so private here there is even street parking easily found in front. Though none of the old furniture remains (and thank heavens), the sandstone facade, fruitwood furnishings, apricot colours and white Italian Calacata marble do the original justice. Two restaurants, the Palm Terrace and 24 hour room service make it so guests don't have to leave this spa-like getaway. The only thing we didn't like was the beauty bar with prices on everything inside the bathroom - at these room rates, the amenities - no matter how posh should be included.
