Son of a Gun 8370 W. 3rd Street 323 782 9033 This seafood- focused sister restaurant to Animal has a distinctly Brooklyn feel to the inside. Reclaimed furniture, bric- a- brac decor and hipster waiters are the setting. Serving up tasting dishes such as amberjack sashimi with serrano chilis in a fish sauce vinaigrette; uni done with yuzu, burrata cheese and button mushrooms; and hamachi with apple, is the focus. Though they will give you the spiel about their "sharing concept", we don't actually think some things are suited to sharing. A lobster roll, with its celery garnish and lemon aioli, is more of a crouton than a roll. And oysters, who shares those? Ever try to cut one in half? But the larger linguine and clams as well as the octopus salad do well if you want to be generous with those with whom you're dining. In fact, the octopus is our favourite thing. There's also plenty for the vegetarians if you don't mind lighter bites. A blood orange, avocado and watercress salad is refreshing. A pickled beet and gem lettuce salad is tart and creamy. An heirloom tomato salad with its olive croutons sneaks towards a good panzanella. Save room for dessert. But order your own frozen lime yoghurt and graham crumble, as well as your own "Italian hamburger" (Gianduja hazelnut chocolate, brioche, caramel and Maldon salt) because believe us, you will want it all for yourself. |
