Bahr Che 26 Astor Place 212 260 2220 This hidden little wine bar is a lovely gem (head south of Astor Place onto Cooper Square/ Fourth Avenue, just past the Chase to find the entrance.) Serving up an ever changing list of sparkling, white, red and sweet wines from around the world; Bahr Che is the perfect bar for those who don't like "bars" or gimmicks. With only a few tables and soft lighting, dates, small groups, or friends catching up will find this corner a delight. Recent easy and appealing drink choices range from the classics such as an Argentinian Pulenta Estate sauvignon blanc, a Thienot Brut, or the Oregon 3 Degrees pinot; to the more unexpected such as a Xarmat Txakollna from Spain, the Californian Turley cinsault or a traditional French cider from Normandy. A menu of eats such as a cheese, charcuterie and pate selection (including a veggie terrine) go well with the wines. Despite the small space, more filling options such as a walnut-dressed goat cheese and tomato salad, a salmon tartare duo, or a lobster truffled mac and cheese are also on offer. A selection of Payard sandwiches proves surprisingly fresh and a good value at just $10. The only downside to this secret treasure is the service; at best, apathetic, at worst, a concern for allergy sufferers. |
