We didn't think we'd ever see the Crisco Disco reborn. But it has been. Only nothing like its previous incarnation. Instead as Gilded Lily and the Monarch Room, this spot could be a set from The Great Gatsby (either version or book, for that matter). Parties for Twelv Magazine, Woodford Reserve and Susanne Bartsch have brought a wide swath of interesting New Yorkers through the doors. And much like the golden age it purports to invoke (we love the staircase and light fixtures), this place has been dipped in gold: the color is everywhere. Sandwiched in such a tight space of Dream, Tao Downtown and 1OAK just around the corner, the big challenge for this cocktail spot will be keeping the crowd consistent. Some nights are amazing, some are a bit haphazard. The house DJ seems to know this, spinning no more than a couple of minutes of each song, as though desperate to hold the attention of a fleeting audience.
