Barbounia 250 Park Avenue South 212 995 0242 Ever wonder what I Will Survive would sound like sung in Greek? Wonder no more. Greek dance music accompanies your dinner at this lively effort in the old Patria space from Danielle Billera and Matthew Johnson (SushiSamba, Sugarcane, Mercadito) and Simon Oren (Nice Matin). Named for the red mullet that swims the Mediterranean, expect very modern Greek inspired food. Truffle apricot yoghurt and spicy feta spread, rabbit Braciola, Portabello moussaka and what else, Crispy Barbounia (it's a starter). We especially like the pikilia platter - the tzaziki is good with an order of the special bread with herbs and the whole roasted or grilled fish options (dorade is our choice). The standout however on the menu - and a must, trust us - is the octopus. Marinated with tomatoes, it's warm and tender without the icky suction cups which might scare off less adventurous diners. We practically licked the plate. Finish up your meal with the chocolate bread pudding and move to the bar with your Ouzo, Raki, and Arak. Dining room seats 100 and the tables for four are much roomier than the two tops so bring your peeps. |
