Arium 31 Little West 12th Street 212 463 8630 The one thing the MPD was missing before Arium was culture. After all there’s only so much velvet rope and steak frites one can do before it all seems a bit…void. Well, into that need comes Arium, a traditional tea salon which possibly features the most tea of any spot in Manhattan. 90 teas on the list (and 20 wines), this salon, headed up by ex lawyer turned artist Jamie Titus, serves up white, black, and green teas as well as the hard- to- find rooibos (red bush leaves from Capetown, South Africa) in three levels of traditional tea – with one, or two, or three courses, so that you can have scones, savouries or sweets. Stop in for a schedule of classical music such as Chopin or Beethoven done on the Steinway B piano in front of stunning art. Chef Richard Guier (ex Montrachet, Ixta and Lot 61’s pastry chef) serves up tasty soups, a stupendous light lunch menu, mostly organic fare that changes weekly to round out the readings, art shows and offerings in this sanctuary. A few hours in here and you’ll forget all about the hustle and bustle right outside. P.s. there's also an attached hair salon - doesn't tea sound like a perfect way of killing all those hours you spend doing double processing? |
