Super friendly (and hot) Aussies set the cheery attitude at one of the great inexpensive restaurants in New York (around $20 a person), ignore the darkish blue lights and don't look too close at the base board paint job, and come here for the fabulous fish. The menu is a simple checkoff list that is every food writer or note takers dream. If you want to know what you ate, you can scrawl all over the paper and bring it back to the restaurant time and again. Fish comes grilled, sauteed, breaded or fried and there's always at least four standards (the night we were there, that was sword fish, shark (!), crimson snapper and bass.) There's also mussels cooked in beer (yum!), chicken schnitzel, a grilled roo and shrimp surf and turf, steak a couple of ways and a burger that comes with bacon, lettuce, tomato, cheese, fried egg, pineapple and beets on it. Everything comes with a side (we liked the red potato salad and the beets with pumpkin seeds). Sometimes the food even comes with trivia; did you know that the Barramundi is the only transsexual fish in the ocean? Ah, an educational dinner. The boozey oyster shooters are a must - especially the Bloody (as in Mary of course.) Don't miss out on the drinks, especially the Sunburn, which is passionfruit tequila and strawberries, and is really good. Last but not least, the fruit pavlova is perfect. Bondi Road is low on decor (the walls are a fun photoprint of Bondi, what else) and it's sort of garage-like, but we can't recommend it enough for what it is; a fantastic fish shack which won't break the bank.
