Ed's Lobster Bar 222 Lafayette Street 212 343 3236 This is a spot that we've been trying to keep secret ever since it opened. But frankly it's too good to keep under wraps. This divine restaurant is a slice of Maine in New York. The long counter-top seating is the focus (there are tables too), where they serve New England clam chowder, a practically perfect lobster roll, Prince Edward Island mussels, Ipswich clams, boulliabaisse, pan seared scallops, lobster pot pie, linguine with clams, and a slew of other seafood driven specialties; there is something here for everyone (well, if you like seafood. Though there is a superb Boston Bibb lettuce salad.) Whether it's the mussels, which make a great sharing appetiser or a reasonably good meal for one, or the seafood sampler platter of its lobster tail, shrimp, clams and oysters; it is possible to have a meal within a range of budgets and and for any sized appetite. Add to that seasonally rotating desserts such as blueberry cobbler and apple crumble, a great wine and imported beer list representing high and low brow options, and the generally laid-back festive feel of this clean, airy spot, and it's a winner for all seasons. |
