Steak Frites 225 Varick Street 212 463 7101 Just West of Soho at the corner of Clarkson is the new location for this 18 year old classic. Relocated from Union Square into an airy room with tons of windows and the street view of a rapidly changing neighbourhood, this 135 seat Paris- style steakhouse (which also houses a private wine room for 14) is a great spot for those who love steak but have friends or S.O.s who don't as rare is it that a menu is this equanimous. The Coronado salad, a main sized portion, or good for two to split to start is delightful with artichokes, hearts of palm, seared tuna, and shrimp. It's a toss- up as to which cut is better, the hanger steak which comes with fries to rival any we've ever had (ask for the chimichurri garlicky sauce); or the filet mignon which is best topped with sauteed mushrooms; or the angus rib eye. There's also tons of options such as moules frites for those who don't want beef, a selection of pastas and sandwiches, and a selection of the day which on the night we went was a lightly breaded chicken. Let the house pair your wines for you (though we must say the Sancerre is lovely.) They serve till 1 am with lunch and dinner every day. |
