Wildwood BBQ 225 Park Avenue South 212 533 2500 Instantly popular with a crowd that's sick of the overly-foodie restaurant scene (no, ramen is not haute cuisine!), this BBQ spot packs 'em in. Larger- than- life Pit Master "Big Lou" Elrose is a former motorcycle cop turned amateur BBQ smoker who used to helm the pit at Hill Country. The winner at this rustic-inspired, Texas wannabe- room is the brisket. Perfect with the Chipotle Raspberry sauce, it's the must- have. But there’s also four varieties of ribs (baby back, pork spare, beef short and lamb spare ribs), pulled pork, smoked chicken and kielbasa. Not just for meat eaters (though that's clearly the game here), there's also a house chopped salad, a turkey Cobb with buttermilk dressing, a grilled chicken salad done with snap peas, mango and goat cheese, and a Cajun style fish sandwich. The save- room- for- it dessert are the peanut butter s'mores (pre-assembled sadly but isn't it about the taste?) What makes this place really right for New Yorkers though are the fun drinks. Serving everything from a Lafont La Roillette beaujolais to Gaston Chiquet champagne to their own Wildwood organic ale, and with a full page of worldwide draughts, this spot has thought a lot about the taste pairings. |
