Burke and Wills 226 West 79th Street 646 823 9251 The beautiful room that is Burke & Wills benefits from two aspects; it's not too large and it has a spectacular skylight. That said, this restaurant that serves "Australian" fare (yes there is the requisite 'roo burger) is just a nice place to dine, versus a themed restaurant. We're not really sure foie gras torchon is Australian anyway (sic) and it is a must. Done with a seared scallop, apple confit, honey and brioche; it's a winner. Along with the lovely rotisserie carrot salad, a mix of traditional orange and more unusual purple baby carrots in a pistachio glaze. The kitchen here loves their rotisserie and this shows in the fantastic roast chicken over squash. It probably has the equivalent of a year's butter in it but it is so good, we guarantee it's worth all those extra spin classes. For diners wanting something lighter than the rib eye and chips, or lamb with kale, the pan seared fish is incredibly light and clean. It isn't going to win any zest awards with it's quite-plain fennel barigoule but for those with a softer palate or nursing a hangover, it does the trick. You'll feel like you were good to your body. After dinner, head upstairs to their delightful cocktail bar, Manhattan Cricket Club, which we have reviewed in a separate listing. |
